How to choose a belt

How to Choose a Belt — Complete Guide for US Shoppers

Buying a belt online seems simple — until you realize there are 10 different ways to get the size wrong. This guide covers everything: sizing, leather types, buckle styles, and how to match a belt with your outfit.

Step 1 — Find Your Correct Belt Size

Belt size is NOT the same as your pant size.

The rule: Belt size = pant size + 2 inches

Examples:

  • Pant size 32 → Belt size 34

  • Pant size 34 → Belt size 36

  • Pant size 36 → Belt size 38

  • Pant size 38 → Belt size 40

  • Pant size 40 → Belt size 42

For waist measurement in inches: Measure your waist where you wear your pants. Add 2 inches. That's your belt size.

If you're between sizes, size up. A belt can be tightened. It can't be lengthened.

Step 2 — Leather Types (What You're Actually Paying For)

Full-Grain Leather — The Best

  • Top layer of the hide, natural grain intact

  • Develops a beautiful patina over time

  • Lasts 10–20 years with care

  • What we sell: all our belts are full-grain

Top-Grain Leather — Good, Not Great

  • Second layer, sanded and refinished

  • Less expensive, but won't age as well

  • Lasts 3–7 years

Genuine Leather — Misleading Name

  • Lowest quality of "real" leather

  • Split hide with coating

  • Cracks and peels within 1–2 years

  • Avoid this

Faux Leather / PU / Vegan Leather

  • Plastic with texture

  • Lasts 6–12 months before flaking

  • Not repairable, not sustainable

Our take: Full-grain or nothing. Cheap belts cost more in the long run.

Step 3 — Buckle Styles

Casual belts (jeans, chinos):

  • 1.5 inch width

  • Metal buckle (brass, nickel, matte black)

  • Stitching visible

  • Worn with jeans, khakis, casual pants

Dress belts (suits, dress pants):

  • 1 to 1.25 inch width

  • Simple frame buckle

  • No visible stitching

  • Matches your shoes (brown belt → brown shoes, black belt → black shoes)

Casual/dress hybrid (business casual):

  • 1.25 to 1.5 inch width

  • Works with chinos and dress pants

  • Versatile — good for most men

Step 4 — Belt Length and Where the End Should Fall

Put the belt on. The tip should end between the first and second belt loop past the buckle.

Too short: Tip ends before the first loop — belt is too small.
Too long: Tip reaches the third loop or beyond — belt is too large.

Your belt should use the middle hole (hole 3 of 5). This gives you room to loosen or tighten as needed.

Step 5 — Color Matching

For dress belts: Match your belt to your shoes.

Black belt → black shoes
Brown belt → brown shoes (any shade works)
Tan belt → tan or cognac shoes

For casual belts: Rules are looser. Brown belt works with blue jeans, khakis, olive pants, gray pants. Black belt works with black jeans, gray pants, darker colors.

Avoid: Mixing brown and black in formal settings.

Step 6 — How to Tell If Your Belt Is Poor Quality

Signs of a bad belt:

  • Edges are painted (not burnished or wrapped)

  • Leather feels plasticky or stiff

  • Stitching is crooked or loose

  • Buckle feels hollow or lightweight

  • No sizing markings (S/M/L instead of inch sizes)

Signs of a good belt (what we sell):

  • Edges are smooth and finished

  • Leather bends but doesn't crack

  • Consistent, tight stitching

  • Solid brass or steel buckle (heavy)

  • Sized in inches (34, 36, 38, etc.)

Step 7 — Belt Care (Make It Last 15+ Years)

Do:

  • Condition leather every 6 months with leather balm

  • Store flat, not rolled

  • Clean with damp cloth and mild soap

Don't:

  • Soak in water

  • Leave in direct sun for days

  • Use harsh chemicals or alcohol wipes

  • Force the belt if it's too tight (stretches holes)
