How to Choose a Rug — Complete Guide for US Shoppers
Buying a rug online can feel risky. Will the size look awkward? Will the color match your photos? Will it shed everywhere?
This guide walks you through everything — from measuring your room to picking the right material and knowing exactly what you're paying for. No fluff, just answers.
Step 1 — Measure Your Space Like a Pro
The most common mistake? Buying a rug that's too small. A tiny floating rug makes a room feel smaller, not larger.
Living room: Rug should go under the front legs of your sofa and chairs. Leave 6–12 inches of floor showing on each side. Size recommendation: 8x10 or 9x12 for most US living rooms.
Dining room: Rug must extend 24–30 inches beyond the table on all sides. Size recommendation: 8x10 or 9x12 for a 6-seat table.
Bedroom: For a king bed: 9x12 minimum. Two runners on each side also work well.
Rug Size and Best For:
5x8 — Kitchen, entryway, home office, small bedroom
6x9 — Apartment living room, under a loveseat
8x10 — Standard living room, under queen bed
9x12 — Dining room, master bedroom, large living room
10x14+ — Open floor plan, under king bed + nightstands
Pro tip: Use painter's tape on your floor to outline the rug size before you buy. Takes 5 minutes, saves a return.
Step 2 — Pick the Right Material
Wool — The Gold Standard: Durable (20+ years), naturally stain-resistant. Best for: living rooms, dining rooms, hallways.
Silk — Luxury, Not for Heavy Traffic: Very soft, incredible shine, but shows every footprint. Best for low-traffic areas, wall hangings.
Viscose (artificial silk): Shiny and soft at half the price, but absorbs water and oil (permanent stains). Best for bedrooms with no shoes, no pets.
Cotton — Casual and Washable: Lightweight, many are machine-washable. Best for kitchens, kids rooms, layering.
Our take: For 90% of US homes, wool is the answer. It handles shoes, spills, kids, and pets better than anything else.
Step 3 — Hand-Knotted vs Machine-Made (Why It Matters)
Hand-knotted rugs: Last 50–100 years, can be repaired, value increases over time.
Machine-made rugs: Last 3–7 years, can't be repaired, value drops to zero.
What we sell: Every rug at Family Shopolf is hand-knotted. We don't sell machine-made.
Step 4 — Color & Pattern That Won't Clash
Start with your largest piece of furniture — usually your sofa. Patterned sofa + busy rug = chaos. Solid sofa + patterned rug = classic and safe.
Colors trending in the US right now: Dusty pink / terracotta, sage green, deep navy, warm cream, muted rust.
Pro tip: Order a rug swatch. We send small samples. Costs nothing, saves returns.
Step 5 — Pile Height (Low vs Medium vs High)
Low pile (under 0.5"): Easy to vacuum, good for dining rooms.
Medium pile (0.5–0.75"): Sweet spot for most homes.
High pile (over 0.75"): Very soft, hard to vacuum. Best for master bedroom.
We recommend: Medium pile for living rooms and dining rooms. High pile for bedrooms only.
Step 6 — Rug Pad Is Not Optional
A rug pad doubles your rug's life. Use it for safety, longevity, and floor protection.
What pad thickness? Low pile → 0.25" felt. Medium pile → 0.25–0.37" felt + rubber. High pile → thin rubber grip only.
Step 7 — What About Shedding?
All new wool rugs shed for 2–6 months. It's not a defect — it's loose fibers. Vacuum 2–3 times per week at first. After 6 months, shedding drops 90%.
